Community Change
To be effective, we need strategies that address the multitude of reasons that lead young people to choose to drink.
Individually Focused
One: Provide Information
Educational presentations, workshops, or publications that provide accurate information on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, or current trends.
Two: Build Skills
Build cognitive and behavioral skills such as goal-setting, social skills, assertiveness, and decision-making.
Three: Provide Social Support
One-on-one or group discussion, counseling, or support groups that help individuals adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Environmentally Focused
Four: Reduce Barriers / Enhance Access
Increase the ease, ability, and opportunity to access services and support.
Five: Change Consequences / Incentives
Increase support and recognition for positive behaviors and impose penalties or required counseling for problem behaviors.
Six: Alter the Physical Design of the Environment
Make changes such as increased lighting, decreased alcohol outlet density and advertising, to reduce risk factors or enhance protection.
Seven: Change Policies and Rules
Promote changes or increase enforcement of laws, ordinances, or policies within communities or organizations.
